Summer Side Dish:

Coleslaw is one of my favorite summer sides — crunchy, creamy, and easy to make. It brightens grilled dishes and is a quick, reliable salad to prepare all season long. This simple recipe is one I return to again and again because it’s fast and always delicious.

What you need for Coleslaw:

  • Mayonnaise
  • Sugar
  • Vinegar
  • Coleslaw mix (shredded cabbage and carrots)

How to make Easy Classic Coleslaw:

This is a very straightforward recipe. I used a pre-shredded coleslaw mix to save time, but you can shred your own cabbage and carrots if you prefer. Use the same quantities whether the cabbage is pre-cut or fresh.

Step one: Whisk together the mayonnaise, sugar, and vinegar until the sugar dissolves and the dressing is smooth. A fork or small whisk works fine.

Step two: Add the coleslaw mix to the dressing and toss until every piece is well coated.

  • Tip: The dressing should be creamy and cling to the vegetables — see the photo below for reference.

Step three: Refrigerate for an hour before serving to let the flavors meld. Chilling is optional, but it improves the texture and depth of flavor.

What to serve with Coleslaw:

  • Baked Chicken Wings
  • Honey BBQ Chicken Tenders
  • Slow Cooker Ribs
  • Ground Turkey Sloppy Joes
  • Grilled BBQ Ranch Chicken

How long can coleslaw stay in the fridge:

This coleslaw keeps well for up to four days refrigerated. Over time the vegetables may release water and soften, so it’s best enjoyed after chilling an hour or shortly after making. If it becomes watery, drain off any excess liquid before serving and give it a quick toss to refresh the texture.
