Creamy peppermint centers coated in chocolate—classic homemade peppermint candies.
Ingredients
  • 1 can sweetened condensed milk
  • 5 1/2 cups powdered sugar, sifted
  • 1 tablespoon peppermint extract
  • 3 cups semisweet chocolate chips
  • 3 tablespoons shortening
Instructions
  1. In a large mixing bowl, combine the sweetened condensed milk, 2 cups of the sifted powdered sugar, and the peppermint extract. Using a paddle attachment on medium speed, mix until well incorporated. Continue adding the remaining powdered sugar in 1/2 cup increments until the mixture forms a stiff but pliable dough.
  2. Form the dough into 3/4-inch balls by gently rolling between your palms.
  3. Flatten each ball into a disk and place the disks on a cutting board or plate. Chill the disks in the freezer for up to 30 minutes to firm them while you prepare the chocolate coating.
  4. Place the chocolate chips in a microwave-safe bowl and melt in 30-second intervals, stirring between each interval, until smooth. Add the shortening and stir until the chocolate is slightly thinner and glossy.
  5. Remove the peppermint disks from the freezer. Using a fork, place a disk on the tines and dip it into the melted chocolate until fully covered. Let excess chocolate drip back into the bowl, then transfer the coated patty to parchment or wax paper to set.
  6. Allow the chocolate to fully set. For faster results, chill the patties in the refrigerator until the coating is dry to the touch. Store the finished peppermint patties in an airtight container. Enjoy!
