Mum Cupcake Bouquet: Mother’s Day DIY Video Tutorial

img 21752 1

Several years ago I created this Mum Cupcake Bouquet. I first shared the recipe in 2014 and then posted a demonstration video in 2015. With short videos now popular, I recently revisited the project and made a one-minute version. I’m still honing my short-form video skills; the clip is a bit soft since I don’t have an external monitor, which makes solo filming challenging. You’ll still get the idea, though.

Below you can watch the one-minute version and the longer talking video. The full recipe and step-by-step instructions are included after the videos.

This is a fun project for kids to help with—very forgiving and great for little hands. I hope you’ll try making a Mum Cupcake Bouquet for Mother’s Day, and if you do, please share photos on my Facebook page. I’d love to see them!

Mum Cupcake Bouquet

Yield: 12 cupcakes

Prep Time: 10 minutes + 15–20 minutes per cupcake

Cook Time: Depends on whether cupcakes are homemade or store-bought

Total Time: Varies depending on whether cupcakes and icing are purchased or made from scratch

A simple and beautiful Mum Cupcake Bouquet that’s perfect for Mother’s Day.

Ingredients:

  • 12 cupcakes (homemade or from a box mix)
  • Icing, homemade or canned
  • Sanding sugar or sprinkles in any color
  • Miniature marshmallows
  • Candy pearls, Good & Plenty, or jelly beans for centers
  • Green licorice for stems

Directions:

  1. Cut about 40 miniature marshmallows in half on the diagonal and place them in a bowl.
  2. Pour sanding sugar or sprinkles into a shallow container for dipping.
  3. Spoon or spread a layer of icing on a cupcake. Work one cupcake at a time so the icing stays tacky and the marshmallows will adhere.
  4. Dip each cut marshmallow half into the sanding sugar or sprinkles, then place them around the outer edge of the cupcake with the sugared side facing inward.
  5. After completing the outer circle, add a second row of marshmallow halves just inside the first, placing them close together. Continue adding rows until the cupcake is filled, leaving a small empty spot in the center.
  6. Place a candy pearl, Good & Plenty, or jelly bean in the center to finish the flower.
  7. Repeat the process for each cupcake. When all are decorated, arrange them on a platter and tuck pieces of green licorice at the base to resemble stems.

Enjoy!
