Secret to a Healthy Make Ahead Gravy Mix

Many commercial bouillon products list salt and additives such as monosodium glutamate near the top of their ingredient lists. If you prefer traditional, whole-food ingredients, the solution is to make your own bouillon powder by dehydrating homemade bone broth. This lets you control the ingredients and reduce or eliminate unwanted additives.

You can use chicken, turkey, or beef bone broth — all dehydrate well. A dehydrator works, but you can also dehydrate bone broth in an oven at low temperature. Once dehydrated and ground, the broth becomes a concentrated bouillon powder you can use in your make-ahead gravy mix.

Can You Make a Vegetarian Gravy Mix?

Yes. You can make a vegetarian version by preparing and dehydrating a homemade vegetable bouillon. Homemade vegetable bouillon concentrates the flavor of onions, carrots, celery, mushrooms, herbs, and other vegetables, then dries into a powder suitable for this mix. Dehydrated vegetable bouillon produces a rich, savory base for vegetarian gravy.
